Cinderella (video)

I’m kind of a wannabe b-girl. I think there is an astounding amount of strength in that community, the kind of strength that can rewrite fairytales and give girls something more to hope for in themselves, than to just be rescued by a boy. That’s not to say something against boys, except maybe you should admire girls who don’t need your rescuing.

It occurred to me that Cinderella was the perfect combination of symbols- here is the story of the girl who sleeps in the ashes, in with the coals- that hidden fire that just needs a little stirring up. She doesn’t need to be plucked from the hearth, washed off, and polished like a gem that fell into the ashes- there’s something more powerful already there in her. So I played with the symbols of ash, fire, shoes (what kind of shoes do you wear? how does that free or constrain you?), and glass (that which is delicate and prone to breaking).
